If you've been umming and ahhing about quitting cigarettes this Stoptober then read on.
Smoking isn't the easiest thing to give up. I know because I've watched family and friends try over the years. It is after all an addiction and like with many addictions, sometimes it takes more than pure willpower alone to call it quits. Luckily these days there's help on hand for anyone who wants to take a step in the right direction.
What Is Stobtober?
If you've not heard of Stoptober before then I'd be really surprised, but for those that are unaware, Stoptober is a twenty eight day campaign from Public Health England which encourages smokers to quit. It has apparently driven over one million quit attempts to date.
Why Bother?
There's the obvious benefits such as your own improved health and of course the money you'll save but you'll also be doing something great for your family. Secondhand smoke or passive smoking as it is often known, can be harmful and can lead to major health problems including cancer.
According to the Cancer Research UK website, thousands of people die every year in the UK from cancers and diseases caused by passive smoking. Children are particularly at risk and have a greater chance of developing respiratory infections, asthma and meningitis. It also increases the risk of cot death.
Statistics reveal that if you can make it to twenty eight days without smoking then you're five times more likely to quit forever. And as the PHE have recognised E-cigarettes as a feasible way to quit smoking, now is the time to consider making the switch.
E-Cigarettes And Nicotine Replacement Therapy
E-Cigarettes have featured prominently this Stoptober and they're a great way to help fight off cravings plus they're much healthier for you than traditional cigarettes. They even feature in the latest Stoptober advertisement. There's also other products and medicines available if you prefer such as nicotine patches or gum, and even prescribed tablets.
Online And Offline Support
If you're looking for your local stop smoking service then you can find it by typing your postcode into the search bar on the NHS Stoptober website. If you don't have internet access then why not speak to your GP and see if he can recommend a local support group or smoking cessation program?
If you're tech savvy then there are also apps you can download to track your progress and give you a little 'virtual' moral support. There is a huge online community out there and you can compare notes and share tips on how to beat cravings.
If you have a look on the Stoptober website you'll even find a Twitter and Facebook group.
It goes without saying that going something as huge as this alone can be daunting, but when you know that there are thousands of others all trying with the same end goal, it can be really motivating.
WIN!
The Electric Tobacconist is an online UK vape store (American version here) and they are giving you the chance to win £50 to spend on their STOPtober range. ReplyDeleteI've tried quitting many times and with many tools - patches, gum...but always fail after about 5 days. I think it's when I'm in social situations that lets me down the most. I've heard of people having success quitting with vaping but am a bit intimidated by it all being a newbie! Would love to have the opportunity to own a set up and learn some more. Thank you! :)

ReplyDeleteI am 39, and started smoking when I was 12, by 35 I was smoking 20-30 a day, roll ups and Cigarettes. Enough was enough! I had tried cold turkey, patches, pills, and sprays, at 37 I tried vaping and have not looked back, yes the first week was hard, but mainly mentally, the physical cravings were 'ok'....now it is a habit I feel at peace with.....I spend 90% less, no longer smell, and I am so much healthier, I get loads more out of life too! I would highly recommend any one who is thinking about it, to do it! A good piece of kit is needed, and now I am a vaper, I am always on the look out for new bits and pieces which is why I am entering, good luck all in your journey and with the comp
