Activated Charcoal: What It Does And How It Can Help You To Look Your Best - Guest Post By Trysh Sutton

One of the biggest new beauty trends still alive as we head into the meat of 2018, is something you might not have thought of before: activated charcoal; and no, I don’t mean the charcoal that we use for barbecues.
Activated charcoal is an interesting commodity that has incredible health benefits, but the beauty benefits are why so many individuals are grabbing some to use for themselves.
Activated charcoal is created using different materials ranging from bamboo to coconut shells, and has been in use since 1500 BC. The science behind the activation of charcoal can be seen here but after activation, the final product is virtually odorless, tasteless and non-toxic and the molecules will bind to almost any surface through a process called adsorption.
In fact, one of its main uses is detoxing the body of an individual who has consumed poison or other dangerous substances. There are several ways that it can be used for beauty, however, and below are the 3 main ones:

Teeth Whitening

Seriously?
Yup!
Activated charcoal has been used orally by many beauty experts because it does something rather interesting. It binds to the dingy substances on the surface of the teeth, removes them, and whitens the teeth in return. It only takes a few uses to get a remarkably whiter smile.
Some companies even sell toothpaste already made with the activated charcoal. All you have to do is brush away.

Face Masks and Cleansers

Many beauty experts use activated charcoal as a beauty face mask as well. It might seem a little weird, and you might even look a little strange at first, but this mask is easy to wash off and you’re doing it at home anyway so there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.
You may get a little ribbing from your kids or your spouse but after the first few uses, they’ll be on the bandwagon too.
When you use an activated charcoal mask or cleanser, the charcoal binds to the toxins, bacteria and dead skin cells on your face, whisking them away and revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion. While you can just purchase the powder and make your own mask, it might be better to find one that is pre-made, seeing that they’re not very expensive and many of them actually have extra ingredients to help your skin even more.

Shampoo

Shampoo might be the last of the things you think about when considering activated charcoal. However, it can be extremely beneficial to your hair.
Activated charcoal shampoo options are great for helping remove the impurities in your hair, especially if you use a lot of products to style it. You just wash your hair like normal, rinsing out the shampoo all the way. When your hair is dry, it will look shinier and feel softer than before. You might even notice a little more body to your locks.

Safety

Activated charcoal is essentially safe since it is not toxic. The only major advice is to avoid using it within two hours of taking any medications or vitamins since it works as an absorber so it may render them ineffective. You should always check with your doctor before ingesting activated charcoal.
However, it is fine to use in the cosmetic ways listed above for most people. Still, patch tests are important anytime you try a new product on your skin to ensure you’re not allergic.
Activated charcoal should never be used as a treatment for bee stings, snake bites, or poisonous spider bites. While they may be great for the short term, you should always see a doctor after something of this nature happens just to ensure that everything is fine.
