We're now well into a new year and many of us our looking for the perfect opportunity to redecorate our homes, why? Because they’re so 2017 of course! Any excuse for a spot of DIY interior design! I’ve teamed up with Oldrids & Downtown, retailer of dinner sets and a department store that has over two hundred years experience, to find out what the trends look like for home design in 2018.

Popular Trends Of 2017
Reflecting on the most popular interior design trends of 2017 will help us to make more accurate trend predictions for 2018. The last twelve months have been all about creating a visually pleasing living space that also feels homely. So, what were some of the best trends that transformed our homes in 2017? Let's take a look;

The world’s brightest neutral - Greenery, won 'Colour of the Year' for 2017. This yellow-green shade represents refreshment and revitalization which a lot of people could relate to at the height of it's popularity. The colour green did in fact do well generally speaking as we saw the use of it in both fashion and commercial design. It was by all accounts an instant hit with members of the general public.

Instagram saw a rise in many aesthetically pleasing feeds with untreated walls being a huge hit for 2017. Rustic and the more industrial look also featured prominently, often teamed with a cosy wood burning stove. This trend was a brilliant way for homeowners to save both time and money when decorating, whilst still giving them the flexibility to be versatile with their furniture.

Cork themed furniture - an environmentally friendly material - was used commonly throughout the year to make homeware items such as vases, glasses and even lampshades. However, these were often accompanied by a metallic surround that gave off a youthful yet premium vibe.

When looking back at what was popular in the kitchenware department, a big trend that seemed to capture the heart of everyone was the use of mason jars as cups. No matter the age, it would appear that nearly everyone had one in their kitchen. This trend even caught on with restaurant owners, who discovered that they could use mason jars to serve drinks as well as storing food and ingredients. Accompanied with a striped straw, mason jars became the perfect item to serve a refreshing and cool beverage.

So there we have some of our standout trends from 2017, but what does 2018 look like?

Interior Predictions For 2018

Copper was pretty big in 2017 but sadly it will go out as quickly as it came in. In it's place, gold and brass furniture will return to become a household essential. The key to these pieces looking good is to keep things simple and subtle. For instance, gold homeware accessories placed on your dresser table will look great, or even golden table legs accompanied with a white table top.

Although last year saw pristine white kitchens being popular, this year homeowners will find themselves mixing and matching materials and colours to give their kitchens an injection of character. Currently it would seem that everyone has a white kitchen, white tiles and white marble worktops and, frankly, it’s a bit repetitive. By simply mixing finishes you can give your kitchen a cool New York-like aesthetic that everyone will love.

Don't be afraid to try something new or different. You don't have to go wild but if you do want to bring a neutral coloured room to life then try adding a rich pop of colour. This can simply be in the form of cushions or curtains if you don't want to go OTT with furniture, and who knows, you might even be the next trendsetter amongst your friends!

Whereas 2017 saw us favouring lighter and brighter colours, darker walls are going to be a hit in 2018. If you opted for untreated walls last year, why not leave them as they are and instead generate something new in your living space? Picture grey walls with mustard curtains are an interior designer’s dream whilst a palette of aged colours will make for a beautiful and elegant backdrop.

With gold making it's comeback, dare I say that a seventies theme will be popular this year? From the units in your living room through to your bedside table, expect the return of wooden furniture. Look for units with plenty of storage space that will also accompany the colour of your walls and threads nicely.

There you have it, some of the predicted trends for 2018. Be the trendsetter amongst your friends, and don’t leave it too late!
