5 Things You Can Do Now To Improve Your Financial Situation*

*This is a collaborative post*

If only you had more money to play with each month. Think of the things you could do with it. You could go on that vacation you have been dreaming about or buy that fabulous outfit you have been eyeing up at the local boutique. You won’t be able to do any of the things you want to do if you don’t have the finances to match. Now, you could shrug your shoulders and admit defeat. Such is life, may be your response. However, there are ways to improve your financial situation, giving you the means to enjoy some of life’s little (and large) luxuries. Here are just five of the options available to you.

1. Get out of debt

It’s annoying when you have to give over a large portion of your income to your debtors each month, especially when you are paying off huge amounts of interest. So, if you do have any kind of debt, make getting rid of it one of your financial goals. Stop spending money on things you can’t afford for starters, and then consolidate your debts into one easier to pay installment, such as on a lower-interest credit card. (See Best.creditcard for available options). If debt is overwhelming you, it is also worth speaking to a debt charity to help you get on top of your financial burden.

2. Start saving money

Impulse buying will not do your bank account any good. Yes, you might see an incredible pair of shoes at the local store, but do you need them? Probably not. Instead of spending your money on those unessential items, start saving your cash instead. Aside from curbing the temptation to open your purse every time you see something you fancy buying, make savings in other ways. This includes finding ways to save on your energy bills, learning how to cook so you aren’t always reliant on takeaways, and repairing your old clothing rather than splashing out on something new.

3. Read something

No, we aren’t talking about picking up the latest copy of Vogue. Instead, we are referring to anything that is going to help you improve your financial situation, perhaps books on how to invest on the stock market or something to improve your financial mindset. Apparently, these are the top 10 personal finance books of all time, so consider ordering one from Amazon. We can’t vouch for them - we are still perusing the pages of Vogue, hypocrites that we are - but you might find something useful.

4. Improve your income

There are all kinds of things you can do to improve your income, from asking for a pay rise to sitting at home and taking the occasional survey. If you’re in a low-paid job, you might even consider a change in career or start your own business from home. It takes some effort, we know, but if you have a wishlist of things you want/need in your life, you do need to be proactive in finding the money to pay for them. Start thinking about it now.

5. Sell anything you don’t need

We accumulate a lot of stuff in our lives, but most of it ends up being useless. Not only that, but those ‘must-buy’ items end up taking too much room in our homes, and we have to spend more money on storage to manage them all. So declutter your house and sell anything you rarely or never use. You can do it easily on sites such as eBay, but there are also Facebook groups and classified sections in your local newspaper where you can advertise your belongings as well.
