Sometimes, life does not go the way we want it to. Despite our best efforts to remain in good spirits, events spiral out of control. We might…
- Suffer
a relationship breakup
- Lose our job
- Have
a fallout with a friend or family member
- Suffer
from money woes
- Get bored with our life and the way it is heading
When life gets you
down, you could do nothing about it. You might…
- Wallow
in self-pity
- Comfort
eat, drink, and spend money
- Resign
yourself to what life has thrown your way
- Complain
to anybody who will listen to you
- Lose yourself to negative thoughts and behaviours
To be honest, many of
us have done one or all of those things when life has kicked us to the floor.
It’s natural; sometimes we get into a place of hurt, and our reactions are not
always helpful. C’est la vie! But there is a better way to think, a better way
to behave, a better way to move forward, despite the setbacks we have faced.
When life gets you down, you should…
- Take
a break from the situation. If
you can get away for a few days, spend time with family and friends
outside of what life has thrown you, or find time to be alone somewhere
relaxing, you may get to a place where you can take perspective on your
life. Re-energise, repair your broken spirit, and regain control over the
negative thoughts that may be permeating through your mind.
- Seek
help. If you are struggling with
something that can’t easily be solved, find the people who can lift you
out of your situation. If depression takes a hold, see your doctor.
Consider the benefits of therapy from services such as Caroline Bronte Counselling; that person
you can talk to without judgement or fear. Find self-help groups relevant
to your solution. And speak to the people who love you, friends and family
who will offer you that caring arm of support.
- Practice
gratitude,
being thankful for all the good things you have in your life, rather than
focussing on the bad. List these things, and remind yourself of them every
time your mind errs on the negative side of your life. Hopefully, you
should find the good outweighs the bad, and your mood may be lifted as a
result.
- Ditch
anything that is bad for you,
whether they are directly or indirectly responsible for the way you are
feeling. If you are in any kind of toxic relationship, be that a boyfriend
or a so-called friend, perhaps it’s time you let go of them. If you engage
in any behaviours that are not helping your situation, then try and break
the hold they have over you. If there is anything else that is causing you
to be unhappy, start to take action to eliminate them from your life. By
taking control of these things today, you may have a happier tomorrow.
- Fight back. Why are you down? What has happened? Take control of the situation, and do something rather than nothing about it. If something can be changed, if you do have the power to alter your situation, then fight alone or with help, no matter how insurmountable the odds seem against you. David did beat Goliath, after all!
