The Importance of The Arts in Education*

The arts in education generally include drama, music, dance, media and visual arts.

These subjects play an important role in enriching children’s learning and can also help to develop communication, creativity and problem solving skills.

I have teamed up with a performing arts school in North London to explore more of the reasons why the arts are an important part of education…

Confidence Building

Drama lessons are an ideal way to build a child’s confidence. Speaking clearly and confidently doesn’t come naturally to all children. However, these skills can be developed through drama. Learning to play an instrument can also help to boost a child’s confidence. This is because music provides many ‘levels’ of learning and accomplishments. Working towards these ‘levels’ can be extremely motivational and confidence boosting for children, especially if they go on to perform in public.

Encourages Teamwork

Performing arts encourages teamwork within a class. The ability to work as part of a team is a vital skill for children to learn, because it helps them to form friendships, put differences aside and reach a shared goal. Furthermore, through these creative subjects, students will experience different opinions and perspectives, as well as receive feedback and advice. This will teach children how to respect, support and encourage each other.

Improves Literacy skills

Children may read famous plays or practice script reading before a performance. Not only will this help to improve your child’s reading skills, but it will also introduce them to different ways of using language, extend their vocabulary and improve pronunciation. Script reading and writing exercises will also help to enhance your child’s spelling and punctuation.

Behind the scenes

Your child may also get an opportunity to experience different activities that go on behind the scenes. For instance, they could help to make costumes or get involved in set design. School shows also provide an opportunity for students to help with lighting and sound, or even get involved in the filming and photography.
