We all want to raise a child who is caring and considerate, but compassion isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s something they have to practise and learn over time, with your help and encouragement. There are lots of things you can do to help your child become kinder and more respectful, and here are some tips from a boys’ school in Hertfordshire.
Teach Your Child to Empathise
Try and help your child see things from different perspectives so that they can empathise with others. If they behave unfavourably towards someone, such as yelling, stealing, or not sharing, ask them how they would feel if someone treated them that way. This should help them understand the feelings of others and encourage them think before they act.
Encourage Your Child to Help Out in the Community
Teach your child that giving back is important. Help them understand that there are a lot of people out there who are far less fortunate than they are and explain that you, as a family, are in a unique position to help. Perhaps you could assist your elderly neighbour with some household chores like mowing the lawn or care for animals at a local shelter. This should help your child learn to hold the feelings of others in high regard.
Help Your Child Understand Body Language and Facial Expressions
Explain to your child that sometimes people can show how they’re feeling without actually speaking. For instance, if someone is crying, they might need to be comforted. If someone is shouting then they’re probably angry, so it would be wise not to do anything that would further wind them up.
Praise and Punish Your Child Accordingly
If your child is rude or unkind, let them know you’re disappointed. Likewise, if they behave with kindness and compassion, praise them, and let them know you are proud. Your motivation and support, as well as discouragement when your child does something wrong, will go a long way in helping your child understand the best ways to behave in certain situations.
