How To Create A More Family-Friendly Kitchen

It can often feel like the main preparer of food spends a lot of time in the kitchen whilst the rest of the family are elsewhere in the house. If you are feeling lonely in this space, it may be time to make a few changes and create a more family-friendly kitchen.

Get Organised

Having a home for everything in your kitchen can sound like quite a challenge. You may be used to having a lot of things out around you when you cook but this can be cluttered and unhelpful to whoever is trying to prepare dinner. De-clutter your kitchen and you will find you have a lot more room for the things that you use often. This will make your space more welcoming and there will be room for more people to be together in the space at the same time.

Drawer and Cupboard Locks

If you have small children, you may be anxious about them spending too much time in the kitchen. After all, this is where you keep the dangerous things such as knives and bleach. Invest in some cupboard locks and this will give you some peace of mind. You will still be able to open the drawers and cupboards yourself and get to anything you need but this will be much more difficult for little fingers.

Art Recycling

If you change the appearance of your kitchen regularly by recycling the kid’s art and replacing it with their new pictures, then your kids will enjoy spending time in this space. They will want to show off their latest achievements to family and friends alike and they will be a lot more interested in spending time in the kitchen. It will give you something new to look at too. If your kids are older, then changing the utensils or replacing flowers can have a similar effect and will certainly brighten up the chef’s day.

Get the Kids Involved with Cooking

You don’t have to wait until your kids are teenagers to teach them how to cook. Children can make simple foods such as jam sandwiches or basic cake recipes when they are toddlers, and you can teach them more complicated recipes as they get older. Kids will love mixing concoctions together and seeing what comes out of the oven and you could instil a life-long love of food and cookery into them from an early age.

Seating Space

Nobody wants to hang around in the kitchen if there is nowhere for them to sit. Therefore, it is a great idea to review your seating arrangements. A dining table and chairs will look fantastic in a large kitchen, but if you have smaller space, kitchen islands are a wonderful way to utilise both workspace and seating for a more family-friendly kitchen.
