Technology never ceases to amaze me. We lead such hectic lives that we don’t often stop to appreciate just how far it has come. We take for granted the technology that we use on a daily basis, not giving it a second thought, yet without it we’d all be a little lost. Let's look at machine vision technology for instance. Machine vision technology - or MVT as it's known - and it's components, are used in many fields such as:
- Retail - ATM's, automated checkouts, vending machines and auto weighing scales
- Medical - Automated laboratory equipment, Microscopy, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Radiology, 3D motion/body analysis
- ITS - Speed violation, lane violation, tracking, MOT/tax/insurance, car parks and access
- Manufacturing - Automotive, textiles, printing and packaging, food and beverage, Pharmaceutical
For those who aren't sure how MVT works, (much like me until a week ago) just imagine giving the gift of sight to a machine or system. It sounds crazy but the machine or system then uses it's 'eyes' (made up of cameras, sensors and other components) to act on the image data automatically. You can click here to find out more about this from Multipx Imaging, they are a leading distributor of this technology and it's components. This spectacular and sophisticated piece of technology can pick up what the human eye can't see. I'm talking 3D Imaging and Robotics, High Speed Imaging, Infra-Red Imaging, Lenses and Lighting and such like.
It might not mean very much to you unless you're an expert in this field, but the majority of us (if not all) benefit from this technology on a regular basis. Every time you go to withdraw money at an ATM, it's down to machine vision technology. Or when you go to do your a weekly shop and use an automated checkout, it's thanks to machine vision technology. When an Ophthalmologist measures your cornea or retina, it's because of MVT. Warehouses and manufacturing companies use industrial vision systems in the form of robot arms to do the bin picking and placing of objects onto an assembly line. They check for defects and poor quality. They perform tasks such as quality checking and food sorting. MVT is used for automatic gated entry and also for food crop inspections - yes really. It can check if the fruit is ripe enough before it's even picked.
Yes this is all amazing, but why should businesses consider incorporating machine vision technology into their business strategy moving forward? How will it be of benefit? Of course machine vision technology won't be relevant to every single business out there. It will really depend on what industry you're based in. However, for those that it does apply to, such as manufacturers and those reliant on quality control, machine vision technology allows for more accuracy and reliability. If you invest in MVT then your business will have the opportunity and potential to;
- Automate processes such as inspections
- Make use of 24/7 inspection systems that don't need a break
- Save time
- Improve productivity and quality
- Reduce human involvement because the technology and it's components do much of the work
- Produce less waste which is a plus not just financially but for the environment too
- Boost efficiency in processes
- Reduce production costs and increase profitability
